Labour activists 'backing' Johnson

12 April 2012

Alan Johnson has been revealed as Labour activists' preferred choice to take over from Gordon Brown as party leader.

Some 32% backed the Home Secretary to take over from the Prime Minister, followed by backbencher Jon Cruddas on 18% and Foreign Secretary David Miliband on 12%.

Deputy leader Harriet Harman was supported by just 5%, in the ComRes survey of Labour councillors for BBC2's The Daily Politics.

But less than a third - 31% - felt a change of leader before the next election would improve Labour's prospects. By contrast, 61% thought they would either not change or get worse.

There was more concern about the impact of MPs' expenses excesses on the party's fortunes.

More than half - 53% - felt the expenses scandal had damaged Labour's chances in their local area.

ComRes interviewed 321 Labour councillors in England and Wales by online survey between September 2 and 24.
