Kercher family sues murder accused

12 April 2012

A lawyer representing the family of murdered British student Meredith Kercher is expected to seek millions in damages from her American room-mate and an Italian co-defendant on trial for the killing.

The Surrey family of 21-year-old Leeds University student Miss Kercher has attached a civil lawsuit to the criminal trial of Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

Prosecutors have asked the eight-member jury to give Knox and Sollecito a life sentence. A verdict is expected next week.

The body of Miss Kercher, from Coulsdon, Surrey, was found in the apartment she shared with Knox in Perugia in November, 2007.

Prosecutors believe she was killed at the end of a drug-induced sex game.
