Jeremy Clarkson’s future at the BBC is likely to be known next week after a report into his behaviour is handed to the director-general.

The Top Gear host was suspended last week when it emerged he was involved in a “fracas” with one of the show’s producers.

A BBC spokesman said: "Following last week's suspension of Jeremy Clarkson, Ken MacQuarrie is now considering the evidence and will report to the director-general on his findings next week.

"Once this has been considered, we will set out any further steps.

"The BBC will not be offering further commentary until then."

Clarkson has been temporarily suspended after allegedly punching producer Oisin Tymon during the row over a hot meal at a hotel.

Both Clarkson and Mr Tymon have now given their evidence to the corporation's inquiry.

The last episodes of the series have been postponed, causing the BBC to lose millions of viewers and receive thousands of complaints.

It was reported earlier today his co-hosts turned down an offer to continue the rest of the hit series without him.

James May and Richard Hammond "didn't want to do it without Jeremy", a BBC executive reportedly said.

Hosts May and Hammond have tweeted about their time off in recent days.

"Vegetables peel more easily if you wet them, yes. But why? #Unemployed."

Yesterday May wrote: "Seriously, if you really are unemployed, good luck to you. It's not funny in reality."

Hammond tweeted a picture of his dog and said: "Not trying to be cryptic, just enjoying a gorgeous morning. Off."
