Hundreds mourn mother and daughters

12 April 2012

Hundreds of mourners gathered for the funeral of a mother and her four daughters who were killed in a house fire.

Caneze Riaz, 39, and her daughters Sayrah, 16, Sophia, 15, Alicia, 10, and three-year-old Hannah, all died in the blaze at the family home in Accrington, Lancs, last Wednesday.

The five caskets were driven under police escort through the narrow terraced streets of the mill town as local people poured onto the streets to observe its passing.

The first coffin, carrying the body of Caneze Riaz, was carried into the Raza Jamia mosque draped in a black cloth with pink and gold Arabic decoration.

Inside the hearse were two words marked out with white chrysanthemums. They read "Caneze" and "Mum". The coffins carrying the bodies of her four daughters followed in reverse age order and were draped in green cloth with the same distinctive pink and gold.

As the Muslim men filled the mosque women stood on the streets outside crying and clutching flowers. A two-minute silence was observed and then prayers recited for the deceased.

Mrs Riaz's husband, and the girls' father Mohammed, died on Friday from burns sustained in the blaze. Detectives believe the 49-year-old locked and bolted the doors of the end terrace on Tremellen Street, less than a mile from the mosque, before pouring fuel around the house and lighting several fires while his family were asleep.

His body is expected to be buried in Pakistan at a later date.

The five were later buried at nearby Accrington Cemetery. The last surviving member of the Riaz family, Adam, 17, joined his uncle Barry Khanan, Caneze's brother, at the cemetery on Burnley Road.

Adam, who has leukaemia, was being treated at the Christie Hospital, Manchester, on the night of the fire. His mother visited him there as he began a new course of treatment only hours before her death.
