House that Abu Qatada's family left in 'filthy' state is still costing taxpayers money

Ready to go: Radical cleric Abu Qatada

Radical cleric Abu Qatada is understood to be still costing taxpayers money - despite having been deported - in the rent on his empty home.

The Home Office is believed to be still paying £1,400 per month on the three-bedroom house after it was abandoned last month.

Qatada, 53, was returned to Jordan after an eight year battle costing £1.7million.

His wife and five children left last week, leaving the garden overgrown and rubbish heaped up in the driveway.

Agents looking after the property claim that the Home Office has not handed in a notice to end the year-long tenancy agreement it signed last November.

Rent and renovations to the property in Stanmore are expected to exceed £6,000.

A source told The Sun: “It’s been left in a horrible way - it’s filthy. There are flies buzzing around in the kitchen. The rest of the house is filled with junk.

“Landlords spent a lot of money doing the place up with carpets and a paint job before they moved in, but it needs it all over again.”

The Home Office declined to comment.
