House blaze deaths father dies

12 April 2012

A husband who killed his wife and four daughters by setting their home alight has died from burns.

Detectives believe Mohammed Riaz ,49, locked and bolted the doors, poured fuel around the house and lit several fires, while his family were asleep early on Wednesday.

His wife Caneze, 39, and daughters Sayrah, 16, Sophia, 15, Alicia, 10, and three-year-old Hannah were trapped in their end terrace home in Accrington, Lancashire.

The children, described by neighbours as "little angels", had been enjoying a Halloween night party just hours before the fire.

The couple's only son, Adam, 17, escaped the tragedy, as he is in The Christie Hospital, Manchester, battling leukaemia.

Mohammed, the only police suspect for the murders, was pulled alive from the blaze but suffered 50% burns and died in Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester at 8.33am on Friday - before detectives could question him.

Khadm Hussain, a friend and neighbour said: "Everybody is so shocked. All the family are dead. There are six people all dead now from the same family. It's a very awful thing. It is very sad."

At the Raza Jamia Masjid mosque, attended by Mohammed, locals said they did not believe he was responsible.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Hunter said police still had no clear motive for the murders.

He said officers had not been able to corroborate local reports Mrs Riaz had been having an affair. But he suggested Adam's illness may have been a factor.
