A string of hilarious Love Actually memes have been posted online by Twitter users urging Theresa May to stand up to Donald Trump.

Mrs May was urged to "channel her inner Hugh Grant" and replicate a scene from the film where his character took aim at the US President during a press conference.

His character, the Prime Minister David, tells the US President in the film "a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend".

He adds: "Since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward, I will be prepared to be much stronger and the president should be prepared for that.”

Twitter was filled with memes urging the Prime Minister to claim her "Love Actually" moment during her meetings and press conference with Mr Trump during his visit to the UK.

Hundreds of tweets referencing Love Actually appeared online ahead of Mr Trump and Mrs May's press conference at Chequers. Many of them referred to the scene in which Hugh Grant’s character David refers to the “special relationship” turning into a “bad relationship.”

Following his press conference with the PM, Mr Trump and First Lady Melania will head to Windsor Castle for tea with the Queen.
