England captain Harry Kane received his MBE from the Duke of Cambridge today after leading the national team to the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and winning the golden boot.

The Tottenham striker was handed the honour for services to football by Prince William.

He attended the ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday with his fiancee Kate Goodland and parents Kim and Patrick Kane.

Kane scored six goals during England’s incredible World Cup run, but the team were knocked out by Croatia after reaching the final four.

England manager Gareth Southgate was handed an OBE for his efforts leading the national team last summer.

After receiving his award, Kane spoke of the importance of tackling racism in football after England players were abused during their 5-1 win over Montenegro in Podgorica on Monday.

He said: "I am just proud of how the boys have handled it. When stuff like that happens it's about more than football but the boys focused on their job, didn't let it affect them and it proved the best way of proving those people wrong is by winning the game and scoring goals.

"It's important that the people in charge take the right action because it is not acceptable in any country or any field or sport or job."

Speaking after the ceremony, Kane said he had been worried about messing up his part.

He added: "I'm so proud, it's a bit out the comfort zone to be off the pitch, but it's a great day for me and my family.

"With football you're in your comfort zone, even in front of thousands of people. Here, you don't want to mess anything up."

Kane received his honour alongside the former editor-in-chief of Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan Joanna Coles and MasterChef winner and restaurateur Thomasina Miers.

Ms Coles, who was chief content officer for Hearst Magazines, which publishes Cosmopolitan, Elle, Esquire, Marie Claire and Country Living, was being presented with an OBE for services to journalism and the media industry.

Ms Miers, co-founder of Mexican street food chain Wahaca and winner of the 2005 series of the BBC's MasterChef, was receiving her OBE for services to the food industry.
