Half of adults 'constantly tired'

12 April 2012

Sleep deprivation is reaching "epidemic" proportions, with people dropping off at work or even while making love, according to a new report.

A survey of 2,000 adults by hotel chain Travelodge showed that more than half admitted to feeling constantly tired, mainly because of work pressures.

Almost half of those questioned said they fell asleep at work, often during meetings or presentations.

Many admitted sneaking away from their desk for a quick power-nap to help them through the day.

More embarrassing places where people fell asleep included in a pub, on a park bench, on a date or even while making love.

Wayne Munnelly, Travelodge's sleep director said: "Due to today's stressful lifestyle, it's no wonder half of the UK population admits to nodding off midway into their busy schedules.

"This is because we are all suffering from sleep debt. You have to think of sleep in the same way as your bank account and ensure you are regularly topping up your sleep account for missed shuteye.

"Otherwise your biological clock goes out of sync, resulting in you falling asleep in an embarrassing situation."
