A man found dead in woodland after three women were injured in a shooting at a hairdresser's has been named by police.

He was 45-year-old Darren Williams, of Cwmbran, South Wales.

A police search was launched for Mr Williams after his ex-partner, who worked at the Carol-Ann salon in Malpas Road, Newport, was shot in the leg on Friday afternoon. Two women clients were also injured in the shooting.

Mr William's ex-partner remains in a stable condition at the Royal Gwent Hospital but the two others have now been released, police said.

Mr Williams was found dead in Brynglas woods - just a mile from where the incident took place. Following an appeal for information by Gwent police a member of the public reporting seeing a grey Mini Cooper car at the side of a canal close to the scene of the shooting. After a search by officers, Mr Williams' body was found about a mile away in woods.

Superintendent Dave Johnson, local commander for Newport, said: "We have family liaison officers working with relatives involved in the shooting at Carol-Ann's hair salon yesterday and neighbourhood officers working with the community in that area, where I know people have been shocked and upset."

Speaking outside the Carol-Ann salon, Mr Johnson, said Mr Williams did not own a shotgun licence and had been known to the police.

Mr Williams was estranged from his wife, which he had been finding "difficult" and had come to the hairdressers to confront her about their separation, Mr Johnson said. He was described as enjoying hunting and the "outdoor life".

It was also revealed the two other women injured had not been "targets" but were harmed when the two shots were fired within the confined area.

Asked if Mr Williams had been the subject of a restraining order, Mr Johnson said: "I'm not able to comment on that at the moment as it's all part of the inquiries we are seeking to undertake through today."
