Adventurer Bear Grylls has joined in activities including climbing, zorbing and survival techniques such as skinning a rabbit with thousands of Scouts.

The daredevil documentary maker, who is Chief Scout, set off on a trip to visit more than 10,000 Scouts taking part in outdoor pursuits over the bank holiday weekend.

Youngsters around the north east of England were able to meet their hero during his whirlwind helicopter tour between filming in Asia and Australia.

Grylls, 35, who became a Cub Scout at the age of eight, went to Northumberland before travelling to South Shields as part of his mission to attend 24 events over the weekend.

He took his seven-year-old son Jesse with him to Northumberland.

"He has joined as a Beaver," Grylls said during a brief interlude from the action. "He loves it."

Grylls said he had fun taking part in the adrenaline-fuelled activities and paid tribute to the Scouts he met.

He said: "My goal as Chief Scout is for every young person that wants to be involved in Scouting to be able to take part.

"But in order to make this happen we need even more adult volunteers to keep up with the demand. So my aim is to encourage even more adults to volunteer alongside me and join in that Scouting adventure."

A spokeswoman for The Scout Association said that waiting lists to join Scouting were at an all-time high due to the need for more adult volunteers.
