A mammoth clean-up operation is underway at Worthy Farm in Somerset as thousands leave the site of Glastonbury festival.

Familiar photos on Monday morning saw the Somerset farm strewn with litter, including hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles, as hordes of bleary-eyed festivalgoers began making their way home.

More than 200,000 people descended on the site at the weekend to take in acts including Lizzo, Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Ray, Lewis Capaldi, Rick Astley, Blondie, Yusuf, and Lil Nas X.

Sir Elton John took to the Pyramid stage on Sunday night for what is thought to be his final UK gig before he retires from touring.

On Monday, litter pickers were seen collecting leftover drink cans, bottles and food waste in bulging bin bags from the ground in front of the Pyramid stage.

Each year, a team of around 1,300 volunteers helps clean up huge amounts of rubbish from Glastonbury, which runs its own on-site recycling plant, and has banned the sale of single-use plastic bottles since 2019.
