A teenage girl arrested after the stabbing of a school pupil during mid-morning break has been charged, police said.

Students at Filton High in Bristol watched in horror as the 14-year-old victim was knifed in her stomach near the school gates.

Her alleged attacker, also 14, remains in custody at Bristol's Staple Hill police station after being charged in the early hours.

She will appear at North Avon Youth Court later on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Darren Bane said: "Following reports of an incident yesterday morning, in which a girl suffered stab wounds near Filton High School, a teenage girl has been charged.

"During the early hours of this morning, a 14-year-old girl was charged with wounding with intent, and with possession of a bladed implement.

"The suspect has been detained to appear at North Avon Youth Court this morning."

The victim was described as being in a "stable condition" at Frenchay Hospital.
