Gerrard faces charge over 'brawl'

12 April 2012

Footballer Steven Gerrard is at court to face trial over his alleged involvement in a nightclub brawl.

Gerrard, 29, is appearing before Liverpool Crown Court with six others and denies a charge of affray relating to an incident at a Southport venue.

The midfielder was at the Lounge Inn, Southport, celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United when trouble flared in the early hours of December 29.

It is alleged Gerrard was involved in a melee in which a businessman was injured.

Gerrard, of Formby, Merseyside, is jointly charged with Accrington Stanley footballers Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Guildford Road, Southport and Robert Grant, 18, of Enstone Road, Litherland.

Also on trial are John Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road, Ian Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue, John McGrattan, 33, of Rimmer Avenue, and Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive, all of Huyton, Merseyside.

The trial is scheduled to last between two and three weeks.
