First 2010 Afghan body arrives home

Anjem Choudary of Islam4UK has abandoned plans to march through Wooton Bassett
12 April 2012

The body of the first soldier to be killed this year in Afghanistan is set to return to British soil.

Private Robert Hayes, 19, of 1st Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment, was killed by an explosion while on foot patrol in Helmand Province on January 3.

His body will be flown to RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire, and then pass through nearby Wootton Bassett.

It comed after controversial group Islam4UK dropped plans to stage an anti-war march through the town, which honours dead British soldiers.

It was reported on Sunday that Home Secretary Alan Johnson was poised to outlaw the group for breaching the Terrorism Act.

British Legion veterans, shopkeepers and residents are expected to line Wootton Bassett's streets to pay their respects to Pte Hayes.

The soldier had been in the Army for a year, but his senior officers said he had already made a "real difference".

Pte Hayes, from Burwell, Cambridgeshire, was also a keen sportsman who played for Newmarket Rugby Club and won his weight category in his battalion's 2009 boxing championships.

The decision to drop the march was welcomed by Mohammed Shafiq from the Ramadhan Foundation, who said Islam4UK leader Anjem Choudary had set out to provoke hatred with the plan.

North Wiltshire MP James Gray said: "It was a media stunt. It was unfortunate he's used Wootton Bassett in achieving this, it was really quite cynical. What the people do is quite straightforward, they stop what they're doing, they bow their heads, all they're doing is paying respect as the soldiers go through. They're not interested in the politics, most of them don't have a view on the war, nor a view on Mr Choudary."
