A local television and radio host has been reported as missing amid fears he was "vulnerable" after the death of a relative.

Peter Rowell, who has regularly presented shows and news items for both ITV West and BBC local radio, was known to be depressed, police said.

Fears were raised after he failed to turn up at BBC Radio Bristol's headquarters to present his afternoon radio show.

The 52-year-old from Wickwar, South Gloucestershire, was last seen at about 8.30am on Tuesday when he left home for work, officers said.

Avon and Somerset Police described him as "vulnerable".

"He did not turn up for work and concern increased when he could not be contacted," a spokesman added. "Peter parked his car at Morrisons supermarket in Yate. He is thought to be depressed following the death of a close relative."

Mr Rowell has white hair and is 5ft 10ins and stocky. He is possibly wearing brown coloured jeans and a white shirt.

Alex Lewis, the stand-in presenter for Mr Rowell's afternoon radio show on Tuesday, told listeners tuning in at 2pm: "You weren't expecting me, were you? He's very healthy usually but today Mr Peter Rowell is a little bit under the weather, so I'm here instead."

After playing the first song in the two-hour show, she added: "I'm sitting in today for Mr Rowell, as he's a little bit poorly."
