London was battered by strong winds and torrential rain on the first day of British Summer Time this weekend.

Gales brought down trees blocking roads and railway lines hours after the clocks changed to bring in the official start of summer.

A fallen tree in Wanstead, east London, caused delays for motorists and meant buses had to be diverted on Sunday afternoon.

There were also delays on the railways caused by overhead wire problems and fallen trees as the south-east was battered by winds of up to 50mph.

National Rail said there was expected to be ongoing disruption between Liverpool Street and Chingford into Sunday evening.

Strong winds and heavy rain is expected to continue into this week as forecasters warned bad weather conditions could affect the Easter weekend.
