Gordon Brown has emerged from the failed bid to oust him as Labour leader more popular with voters, but his party has failed to further dent the Tory lead, an opinion poll has suggested.

A YouGov survey found the Prime Minister's personal rating had jumped by 10 points since last month to its highest level since April last year.

However he remains far less popular than David Cameron or Nick Clegg, who enjoyed smaller boosts, and twice as many voters still think he is doing a bad job as PM than a good one.

Mr Cameron's Conservatives retained a nine point advantage over Labour in the poll, with both unchanged on 40% and 31%, as the governing party held on to a four point leap secured last month.

The Liberal Democrats, led by Mr Clegg, were up two points at 18%.

YouGov interviewed a representative sample of 2,033 voters, online across Britain, on January 14 and 15 - during the week after the botched coup attempt by two former cabinet ministers.
