Anti-gay comments made by a Ukip councillor have sparked an online campaign to get The Weather Girls' hit song It's Raining Men to number one.

The track, which has become an anthem for the gay community since its release in 1983, is being promoted by campaigners on social media in protest against David Silvester's recent rant.

The Henley-on-Thames councillor has been suspended from his party after claiming MPs who acted "against the Gospel" in supporting gay marriage laws had caused the country's recent floods.

A Facebook page calling on people to buy It's Raining Men as an act of protest has been liked by more than 3000 people since it was created on Sunday.

Supporters have also taken to Twitter to promote the single, using the hashtag #RainingMenNo1.

Blame: David Silvester said the bad weather was a result of gay marriage laws being passed.

The campaign's organisers have asked people to buy the song from Monday to give it the best chance of taking the top spot.

In a Facebook post last night they wrote: "Just to clarify, as a few people have posted that they have bought the song already tonight.

"We are all buying the song as a group from Monday the 27th January (which is next Monday).

"This is to allow us to build up the campaign to make sure that as many people are taking part as possible, giving us the best chance to succeed at actually reaching Number 1 at the end of that week!"
