The Brexit saga, England’s remarkable World Cup journey and royal weddings and babies all feature in our award-winning photographer’s top pictures of 2018.

Evening Standard snapper and National Newspaper Photographer of the Year Jeremy Selwyn has chosen his top pictures from a memorable year in the UK and across the world.

Over 12 months that have seen Britain divided by Brexit, Mr Selwyn said a considerable part of his time has been spent following Prime Minister Theresa May.

“The big thing has been Brexit, I’ve been in Downing Street week in week out,” he told the Standard.

“It’s a very calm street, there’s no sun, no wind. That has been my year, following the prime minister.”

Mr Selwyn said his highlights of 2018 include covering the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast and the World Cup in Russia.

At the games he snapped photos of a jubilant England women’s netball team after they won a miraculous gold medal and captured male triathletes plunging into the water at the start of their race.

He said: “There was the Commonwealth Games, I spent three weeks on the Gold Coast and Team England did really well.

“There was our netball girls, photographing Adam Peaty although he had a disappointing games, seeing all the athletes dive into the water at the start of the triathlon.”

“Then there was going to the World Cup,” he added.

“The Russians couldn’t have been better to us. It was the best World Cup I have been to and I’ve been to eight.”

One particularly memorable image captured by Mr Selwyn was a waistcoat-wearing Gareth Southgate punching the air in celebration after England’s last-gasp win over Tunisia in the team's opening game.

Among his most moving photographs was Elton John in tears as he launched the Standard’s AIDSfree Campaign on behalf of 37m people living with the HIV virus.

“To see him being so moved by the HIV problem, in his position as a major celebrity, was very interesting and made for a very strong picture,” he said.

2018 also saw two royal weddings, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in October, as well as the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s third child Louis.

The weather has also been a feature this year, with Mr Selwyn capturing stunning images of a frozen London in March before a sweltering heatwave struck in June.

“I remember I photographed one bloke in Clapham Junction who was absolutely drenched through with sweat,” he added.
