Enjoy some sun over the weekend ... but it will be wet again first

Heavy showers could bring yet more misery to people in London and the South-East tonight — but we may finally get some summery weather by the weekend, according to forecasters.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for parts of the capital, Kent and Essex with heavy rain, localised flooding and thunder expected across an area stretching to the Isle of Wight throughout the afternoon and evening.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “The rain today could cause some problems for travel because of the standing water that is already about, but we are seeing a gradual building of pressure and that will lead to an improvement in the weather with more sunny spells. Tomorrow will still see some showers in the region but Saturday will be drier and sunnier and Sunday should be the good day.”

Temperatures are expected to soar next week in time for the start of school holidays, but may fall again as the Olympics begin.

The unseasonable cool and damp weather suffered by Londoners for much of the summer has led to an increased number of colds, new figures suggest. Care, which sells over-the-counter medicine products, has reported that sales in its “winter wellness” category were up 45 per cent in June compared with last year.

Cough medicine Covonia also reported a 65 per cent rise in sales.

London GP Dr Sarah Jarvis said: “In the past month I have noticed a much larger number of my patients displaying cough and cold symptoms. While there is always a chance of developing these ailments throughout the year, it is very possible that the recent weather conditions have been a major factor.”

The wettest June since 1910 was behind a 0.7 per cent drop in food sales, while clothing retailers saw sales jump 2.5 per cent as they brought forward summer sales.
