Edinburgh street and University of Glasgow campus in Dumfries evacuated over 'suspicious package' alerts

A building in central Edinburgh and a university campus in Dumfries have been evacuated following reports of a suspicious package.

Police cordoned off an area of Princes Street after receiving reports of the item at around 12.30pm on Thursday.

Local media reported the package was sent to the Halifax building.

At the same time a suspicious package was found at the University of Glasgow campus in Dumfries.

Emergency services are at the scene and part of the campus was evacuated as a precaution.

It comes one day after police destroyed a device sent to the University of Glasgow in Glasgow.

Edinburgh Police tweeted: "We received a report of a suspicious package having been received at a business premises on Princes Street at around 12.30pm today.

"The building has been evacuated as a precaution & officers are in attendance to progress inquiries.

"We will provide further updates in due course."

Dumfries and Galloway Police wrote: "Following the discovery of a suspicious package found at the University of Glasgow campus in Dumfries earlier today, emergency services are in attendance and part of the campus has been evacuated as a precaution."
