Eavis and Boris 'most influential'

12 April 2012

Gordon Brown, Boris Johnson and Michael Eavis are among the most influential 100 figures in the world, according to a US publication.

Time magazine's annual list sees the three men rank alongside Barack and Michelle Obama, the Twitter Guys and swindler Bernie Madoff in a eclectic mix of those deemed to have made the most impact over the last year.

Other Britons include actress Kate Winslet and designer Stella McCartney, but there is no room for either the Queen or Conservative leader David Cameron.

Each entry on the list is accompanied by a write-up from an equally famous name.

The Prime Minister figures among European premiers Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel in the Leaders and Revolutionaries section. Harry Potter author JK Rowling describes Mr Brown as "affable, funny and gregarious, a great listener, a kind and loyal friend".

Mr Brown features twice in the list - as both an entrant and then as writer of President Obama's citation.

It reads: "Of course, his oratory is today unmatched. But his courage - the courage to go first, to lead, where none have gone before - is doubly unmatched."

Mr Johnson's flattering profile is written by jailed media tycoon Conrad Black, who describes the London Mayor "the most original new face in British politics since the emergence of Margaret Thatcher as a capitalist conservative nearly 40 years ago".

Glastonbury festival organiser Mr Eavis is hailed by Chris Martin as "one of the people to whom I owe my life and career".

The Coldplay frontman added: "We've headlined other festivals, but Glastonbury is the only one that feels like - and is - a family event. It's also the only one where we received some handmade cheese as a thank you."
