Man charged in connection with police officer murder bid

A man has been charged in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer in Northern Ireland.

A bomb was discovered beside the woman’s car in Dungiven last month.

A 59-year-old man has been charged with acquiring explosives and is due to appear at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court on June 9.

He was arrested by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Legacy Investigation Branch in connection with the 1993 murder of Constable Michael Ferguson.

The man, along with two other men, aged 48 and 62, who were also arrested in connection with Constable Ferguson’s murder, were released following questioning.

Also on Friday, a 52-year-old man was remanded in custody after appearing at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on five terrorism charges.

The charges are in connection with the attempted murder of the police officer in Dungiven last month and the discovery of an improvised mortar bomb device in Strabane in September 2019.
