Diana’s butler claims Clifford sent private papers to NoW

Princess Diana’s former butler is suing Max Clifford for allegedly passing his confidential documents to the News of the World.

Paul Burrell, 54, hired the celebrity publicist to prevent damaging stories about his work with the princess being published by the defunct Sunday tabloid.

He claims Mr Clifford asked him to write down the sensitive information that he feared might be uncovered by the press so he knew what might come up.

Mr Burrell’s lawyer Mark Lewis, who also represents the family of Milly Dowler, claims Mr Clifford faxed the handwritten documents to the NoW.

The lawsuit is a fresh blow for Mr Clifford, who was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences by police investigating the Jimmy Savile scandal. He denies the allegations.

Today, Mr Clifford issued a robust denial: “The claims made by Mr Burrell have no merit. His allegations are opportunistic and are denied.”
