A British man has been found dead in a hotel swimming pool in Cyprus.

The 21-year-old, who has not been named, was found unconscious in the pool in Paphos at around 6pm on Tuesday.

He was on holiday with his parents when the tragedy unfolded this week, a police spokesperson told the Cyprus Mail.

Lifeguards tried to revive the young man but when they were unable to do so he was taken to Paphos hospital, local media reported.

At hospital, the British holidaymaker was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit Department.

But medics later pronounced the 21-year-old dead at the hospital around 9pm local time.

A Foreign Office statement told The Sun: “We are providing consular support to the family of a British national who has died in Cyprus.”

A post mortem examination will be carried out on Wednesday.

Police are investigating the incident.

Cyprus is a popular holiday destination for people in the UK.

Paphos is a coastal city in southwest Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District.

Around one million British nationals visit Cyprus every year, according to latest government figures.

The Standard has reached out to the Foreign Office for further comment.
