Romy Iris Charlotte: Boris Johnson and Carrie name their baby daughter

Daniel Keane16 December 2021

Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie, have named their new daughter Romy Iris Charlotte Johnson.

Mrs Johnson said Romy was picked after her aunt Rosemary, Iris for the Greek word for rainbow, and Charlotte after Mr Johnson’s late mother.

Speaking to ITV News while on a visit to a vaccination centre in Kent on Thursday afternoon, the prime minister confirmed the news to reporters.

The couple announced the birth of a “healthy baby girl” at a London hospital on December 9. It is their second child together after the birth of Wilfred in April last year.

Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson was named partly in tribute to two doctors, Nick Hart and Nick Price, who helped saved the Prime Minister’s life when he was admitted to hospital with Covid earlier that month.

Mr and Mrs Johnson announced they were expecting their second child together at the end of July, as the 33-year-old environmental campaigner spoke of having a miscarriage earlier in the year.

The couple married during a secretly-planned wedding at Westminster Cathedral in May.

Mr Johnson, 57, also has four children with his barrister ex-wife Marina Wheeler.

The prime minister did not take an extended period of leave following Romy’s birth as he battles a string of political scandals as well as the spread of the Omicron variant.

Speaking to broadcasters on Thursday, he insisted he would do “whatever I can to protect the public” as daily Covid cases hit a peak of over 78,000 on Wednesday.

He said: “What we’re saying to people is there’s a lot of Omicron around, be careful, exercise caution if you want to avoid isolation, getting unwell, over Christmas.

“Implement Plan B but get boosted now is the fastest route back to normality because the booster does give you an excellent level of protection.”
