A 13-month-old baby girl was pushed into the road during an argument between her mother and another woman, police have said.

The 22-year-old mother was with the toddler in Portsmouth, Hants, on Sunday afternoon when the argument took place and she was assaulted.

The buggy containing the child was then pushed into the road and was narrowly missed by a car.

The driver got out an intervened in the argument and another woman retrieved the buggy.

A 24-year-old was arrested and released on police bail.

Officers are appealing for witnesses.

"This was a particularly nasty unprovoked attack, the consequences of which could have been tragic", a Hampshire police spokesman said.
