A canoeist died after he became trapped on a river weir in what police have described as a "tragic accident".
The 37-year-old man, who has not been named, was pulled from the River Calder, near Halifax, West Yorkshire, in a full-scale rescue operation involving police and firefighters.
West Yorkshire Police said the man who died was one of four canoeists who got into difficulties on the river between the villages of Luddenden Foot and Sowerby Bridge.
Inspector Michael Green of West Yorkshire Police said the man who died was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax, in a very serious condition but was later declared dead. He is from Leeds, but Mr Green said he is unlikely to be named until Monday.
The officer said: "Police were contacted by the fire service who were attending a report of canoeists trapped on a weir in the River Calder near to Styles Lane, Boulderclough, Sowerby Bridge.
"Initially it was suggested three canoeists - it was in fact four canoeists - were taken to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax by ambulance.
"A 37-year-old man from the Leeds area has been declared dead. The other three are expected to make a full recovery."
A police investigation was continuing into what happened, but officers have already said there were no suspicious circumstances. Mr Green said: "It is believed to have been a tragic accident."
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said four canoeists were believed to be in the water when they were called out but two managed to climb out of the river without assistance.
He said the other two were pulled out with the help of a "water rescue sled" during the major operation which included bringing in specialist crews and equipment from across West Yorkshire.
