A canoeist has died after getting into difficulties on a weir.
Northumbria Police said Andrew Weatherill, 33, was pulled from the River Tyne at Riding Mill near Hexham, Northumberland, by an RAF helicopter crew but he was pronounced dead at hospital in Newcastle.
A spokesman said emergency services were called to the weir beside the Riding Mill pump station, which is just off the A695, at 2.25pm on Saturday.
Police, paramedics, an air ambulance, firefighters and a helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland were all called to the scene.
The spokesman said: "Due to the turbulent river water, the canoeist was winched out of the canoe by an RAF Boulmer helicopter at 3.04pm and was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
"He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Relatives have been informed. A report is being prepared for the coroner."
Mr Weatherill was from Hartlepool, police said.
