Camilla to name new 'queen' liner

12 April 2012

The Duchess of Cornwall is due to officially name Cunard's new luxury liner - the Queen Victoria - in a lavish ceremony in Southampton.

Accompanied by the Prince of Wales, Camilla will be the first non-monarch to launch or name a Cunard "queen".

The Queen launched the QE2 in 1967 and was in Southampton to name the Queen Mary 2 (QM2) in 2004.

Before that, Queen Mary launched the first Queen Mary in 1934, while Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, launched the first Queen Elizabeth in 1938.

Built at Italy's Fincantieri shipyard, the 90,000-tonne Queen Victoria will carry 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew.

Hundreds of guests will attend the Queen Victoria naming ceremony, which will be followed by a gala dinner on board the 1,000ft long, 18-deck vessel.

On Tuesday, the ship will leave its home port of Southampton for its maiden, 10-day voyage around northern Europe.

Although smaller than the 150,000-tonne QM2, the Queen Victoria promises to be Cunard's most luxurious liner yet.

Among the new vessel's amenities are an 830-seat theatre, seven restaurants, three swimming pools, a 6,000-book library and a casino.

With the QE2 still in service until the end of next year, the three Cunard queens will be brought together in New York next month - one of the stops the Queen Victoria will be making on its first world cruise.
