Shoppers who buy small boxes of chocolates are being ripped off, consumer experts have said.

Chocolate-lovers who buy smaller packs of festive favourites like Quality Street and Cadbury Roses could be paying twice as much for their sugar fix, according to Which?

The consumer watchdog compared the price per 100g of brands including Mars Celebrations in a bid to work out the best value for money.

Asda customers risk paying double the price for tubs of Quality Street.

A 1.32kg tub costs 53p per 100g, while those opting for a smaller 265g box would pay £1.02 per 100g.

The supermarket also had the cheapest chocolate prices overall.

Large packs of Cadbury Heroes and Celebrations cost 62p and 58p respectively per 100g.

Waitrose stocked the cheapest box of Roses at 55p per 100g.

Morrisons offered the best price for Cadbury's Milk Tray - 93p per 100g.

Richard Headland, Which? magazine editor, said: "As the festive shopping season gets into full swing people are starting to stock up on their Christmas treats and snacks.

"Chocolate boxes are a firm favourite and this snapshot research shows that it can be worth comparing prices by weight to save money at this time of year."
