Who was Keith Haring?

Keith Haring was a pop artist who worked in New York in the 1980s. His graffiti in New York’s subways earned him fame in the early 1980s, and his icons such as figures, dogs, and hearts soon became widely recognisable.

Although he began working in chalk on blank advertisement spaces, he soon moved from graffiti to large-scale murals across the city as his work became recognised.

Haring’s work focused on social activism, particularly safe sex and Aids awareness. He established the Keith Haring Foundation in 1989, which continues to preserve and circulate his artwork, as well as providing grants to children in need and those affected by HIV/Aids.

Keith Haring died in 1990, aged 31, from Aids-related complications.
