Brown goes on £39bn spending spree

12 April 2012

Gordon Brown has announced more than £39 billion in Government spending since taking over at Downing Street, it has been revealed.

The huge funding spree may have helped engineer Labour's "bounce" in the polls under Mr Brown's leadership.

The Guardian calculated the figure by analysing the 40 written and oral announcements made to the Commons since Tony Blair's departure seven weeks ago.

Altogether, £39.32 billion in new spending has been unveiled by Whitehall departments.

The highest-profile allocations include an extra £7.7 billion for defence, £15 billion to improve the railway network, and £4 billion for early years education.

Funding for affordable housing has also been increased from £5 billion to £8 billion, while the flood defence budget was raised to £800 million in the wake of recent downpours.

The blitz has heightened speculation that Mr Brown could be planning an early general election, particularly with David Cameron struggling to reassert control over his Tories after a series of setbacks.

The Treasury has already committed to restricting public spending to a 1.9% annual rise over the next three-year review period - the budgets for which are due to be unveiled in October.

Some observers believe Mr Brown used his previous position as chancellor to hold back announcements during Mr Blair's premiership.

It is also suggested he is "pre-announcing" measures that would normally have been revealed in the Autumn.
