Britons hurt in Bangkok bombing

12 April 2012

Two Britons have been injured in one of a string of bomb blasts which rocked the Thai capital Bangkok.

The Foreign Office said Alistair Graham and Paul Hewitt had been caught up in one of the latest explosions in the city.

Nine explosive devices detonated, killing three people and injuring 38 - at least six of whom were foreigners.

Mr Hewitt, believed to be 55, had sustained minor shrapnel wounds and was being kept in hospital overnight, but his injuries were not thought to be serious.

A Foreign Office spokesman said Mr Graham, who was reported to be 48, had been treated and discharged. It was not known where in the UK the men came from.

"We were deeply disturbed to hear about the string of bomb attacks which have been reported across Bangkok," the spokesman said. "Whoever is behind these attacks, they clearly demonstrate an indiscriminate callousness for human life."

Earlier the Foreign Office warned British travellers not to travel around Bangkok "unless absolutely necessary".

Of the nine explosions, six went off almost simultaneously before midnight while a seventh device was found unexploded in a hotel toilet.

Three later bombs blew up minutes after midnight in a telephone booth, a hotel and near a canal bridge in a city centre area packed with hotels and tourist spots.
