A Briton has been arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling in Indonesia.

The suspect is understood to be 53-year-old Jack Walker, from Wythenshawe, Manchester.

It is thought he was stopped at the airport in Jakarta at the end of August.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the arrest of a British national at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia.

"We are providing consular assistance."

The death penalty can be imposed in Indonesia for those convicted of drug trafficking.

A friend and neighbour of Mr Walker told the Manchester Evening News: "We're really shocked. It's unbelievable.

"My husband and I are devastated. We've known Jack for 19 years.

"He's never been in any trouble. I feel so sorry for him."
