British soldier dies in Iraq attack

12 April 2012

A UK soldier has died following an attack in central Basra in southern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier sustained wounds in the Al Tuwaysa district of Basra, during an attack on a convoy he was travelling in.

A civilian driver was also killed after a fuel tanker was set on fire.

Not all of the dead soldier's family members have been made aware of his death and further details about him are not being released at the moment.

He was injured during an attack on a re-supply convoy he was travelling in to a multi-national force base, the MoD said.

The soldier was evacuated to Basra Palace for treatment, but later died of his wounds.

The driver who was killed was not of British nationality, the MoD said.

The soldier's death brings the total number of British military fatalities since the hostilities in Iraq began to 149.

An MoD spokesman said it was a "small arms fire" attack, but he did not have any further details.

He had no information that anyone else was injured.
