British Airways is planning to cut the legroom on some of short-haul flights to less than the space provided by Ryanair.

It is adding two extra rows of seats to Airbus planes, reducing leg room from 30 inches to 29 inches, the same as its budget rival easyJet but one inch less than Ryanair.

A BA spokesman said: “From next year we’re making a small increase in the number of seats on our A320 and A321 fleets so we can keep fares low.

“Customers fly with us because we offer quality and value in all areas.”

It comes after British Airways stopped serving complimentary food to guests on short-haul flights – defined by BA as five hours or less – in January.

The airline announced the move last September, saying it would begin charging for meals in economy seating on short European flights to turn catering into a revenue stream.
