British adventurers to follow Scott

12 April 2012

A pair of intrepid British adventurers will attempt to retrace Scott of the Antarctic's steps in an expedition to mark the centenary of the explorer's death.

Ben Saunders and Alastair Humphreys announced their plans on Sunday - 97 years to the day since Captain Robert Falcon Scott died on his return from the South Pole.

No one has successfully travelled to the Pole and back on foot since Scott's ill-fated expedition in 1912.

The men will set off from Scott's wooden hut on the coast of Antarctica in the autumn of 2011.

Dragging food and supplies on sledges, the pair will be alone and unaided as they walk the 1,800-mile round-trip to the South Pole and back in honour of Scott's contribution to polar exploration and human endeavour.

They estimate the Scott Antarctic Expedition will take four months, returning in the centenary year of Scott's death.

Plymouth-born Mr Saunders, 31, who lives in London, became the youngest person to ski solo to the North Pole in 2004 and set the record for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton.

He spent a short period in the Army after training at Sandhurst but now spends his time on expeditions and sporting challenges, as well as earning money as a motivational speaker.

He said: "The Scott Antarctic Expedition represents one of the most severe physical and psychological challenges on earth and the journey will be a chance to test the very limits of human potential, as well as an opportunity to fulfil a dream I've had since childhood.

Mr Saunders said preparation would include trips to the Antarctic this year and next year, as well as numerous endurance events and fitness training.
