Britain braced for stormy weather

12 April 2012

Britain is braced for potentially dangerous gales that are expected to batter parts of the country over the next 24 hours.

Forecasters are predicting high winds with gusts of up to 75mph with southern and eastern parts of the UK most at risk.

The Met Office issued an "early warning" that a "vigorous" depression was to due to move north across the country.

A spokesman said there still remained "doubt" over the exact path of the storm, but warned of gusts reaching 65-75mph.

"Gusts to this strength are infrequent across the South East and likely to lead to disruption to transport and power supplies," he added.

Other forecasters warned that Wales, Irish Sea coasts and parts of Scotland were likely to be hit by winds gusting between 60mph and 70mph.

Motorists and members of the public were advised to plan ahead for any weekend activities because of the forecast.

The Highways Agency advised drivers to take extra care, especially those with high-sided vehicles or towing caravans.

Meanwhile, the country could be set to have the warmest autumn on record if temperatures continue to hit above average levels during the remainder of November.

Although official figures are yet to be published, London's Evening Standard newspaper reported that the period from September 1 to November 21 was the warmest since 1772.
