Bracing winds and heavy showers are expected to hit parts of the UK again, hammering home the unwelcome news that autumn has arrived.
Gusts of up to 50mph could be felt over hilly regions and exposed western coastal areas with persistent rain falling in Northern Ireland, Wales and North West England, forecasters said.
But the conditions should not be as severe as they were on Tuesday when violent storms and driving rain brought the disappointing summer to an abrupt end.
Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: "Today will still be quite breezy and windy but we will not see the same kind of gusts we saw yesterday.
"There will be scattered showers this morning mostly in the north and west of the UK, with some heavy falls in western Scotland.
"More persistent rain will then move into Northern Ireland, Wales and North West England during the day.
"Cloud is expected in the south of the UK but it should be dry with the exception of one of two showers."
Flood warnings have been issued by the Environment Agency for the River Ure in Boroughbridge, north Yorkshire and Derwent Water in Cumbria.
Strong winds mean restrictions are in place for motorists travelling on the M62 Ouse Bridge in west Yorkshire and the M48 Severn Bridge in Gloucestershire. Southend Pier in Essex was closed after it was hit by a barge battered by high winds and heavy swell.
The winds are expected to die down by Thursday but more showers are forecast. Friday is set to be dry and warm in the South East.
