Boris Johnson has abandoned plans to allow transgender people to self-identify as the opposite sex, according to reports.

The Prime Minister was considering controversial changes to the Gender Recognition Act to allow those who question their gender to alter their birth certificates without a medical diagnosis.

But these have been ditched so the current requirement for two doctors to sign off on the change could remain, according to the Sunday Times.

Number 10 plans to announce a ban on “gay-cure” therapies in what was described as an attempt to placate the LGBT community, the newspaper said.

The PM is also said to be preparing new protections that would prevent people with male anatomy from using women-only spaces, including refuges and public toilets.

Equalities Minister Liz Truss will publish the official outcome of a consultation into the GRA that began in October 2018 before the summer recess from Parliament, the newspaper reported.

Following a leaked document outlining the Government’s response, the Sunday Times said around 100,000 responses to the public consultation were received, with around 70 per cent in favour of allowing people to self-identify as a man or a woman.

But officials were said to believe that the results had been “skewed” by an “avalanche” of responses generated by trans rights groups.

Downing Street declined to comment when approached by the Standard.

However, a No10 source said: “The report is not yet finalised and the prime minister will have the final say on the recommendations.”
