Body found in missing Briton search

12 April 2012

A body has been found near a resort in Mexico where a British great-grandmother went missing while on holiday.

Julia Howard, 77, from Edinburgh, vanished from a holiday resort hours after arriving with her family in mid-June.

Mrs Howard's son Henry Harvey said: "We've been told they have found a body and it's been identified as my mum through her jewellery - her rings and her watch."

He told the BBC: "We are going out to Cancun on Monday - myself, my wife, my brother and my sister - and we hope to bring her back next week sometime.

"Other than that, we don't know anything but hopefully once we get out there we will be able to find out a lot more."

Local reports in Cancun said a body had been found in an isolated mangrove area near the Moon Palace resort.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "The Cancun authorities have informed us that a body has been found. We are not yet in a position to confirm any further details."

Mrs Howard disappeared after telling her family, who were sunbathing by a pool, that she was going to fetch a sun hat then go for a walk.

Local Cancun reports said a body had been found by security personnel at a nearby ranch, in a location three miles from where she was last seen alive by her family.
