Bodies of Corfu children flown home

12 April 2012

The bodies of two children killed by carbon monoxide gas while on holiday in Corfu have arrived back in the UK.

The flight carrying Robert Shepherd, six, and his sister Christianne, seven, landed at Manchester Airport shortly before 5pm on Monday.

Their mother, Sharon Wood, 35, of Horbury, West Yorkshire, accompanied them on the three-and-a-half-hour journey after she had jetted out to identify the pair.

They were found dead in a holiday bungalow after poisonous fumes leaked from an apparently faulty boiler.

Mrs Wood and second husband Paul were allowed to get off the Airbus A320 first while the other 180 passengers remained on board.

They were taken to a waiting limousine on the airfield at the airport's Terminal 1. The vehicle was escorted to a side exit and left the airport.

A hearse will transport the bodies to the airport's cargo centre where the death certificates and other relevant paperwork will be checked before it is allowed to leave. It is then expected to travel to West Yorkshire.

The children's father, Neil Shepherd, 38, remains seriously ill after he and his girlfriend, Ruth Beatson, were also poisoned by the gas.

Mr Shepherd is conscious but still in the intensive care ward of the General Hospital of Corfu, its manager said.

Ms Beatson, 27, who has been moved into a regular hospital room, is expected to continue her good recovery, said Ioanis Manzaropolous.
