Birmingham city council has mowed two-metre strips into green spaces to remind people to obey social distancing rules.

The council said its grounds maintenance team are cutting two-metre “channels”, and leaving the same width uncut in its parks and green spaces, to show visitors how to keep a distance from each other.

Councillor John O’Shea told the Standard: “As the lockdown eases, we’ve just decided to put some visual cues onto our 591 parks to remind people using them of the need to maintain social distance.

“It was the brainchild of officers in the parks service and we can’t really assess efficacy as we’ve just started doing it.

"It has certainly got attention and that helps when we have to keep the message going out to the public.

“Our 14 square miles of parks are open for visitors - they are often the only green space people have available to them, so we know how valuable they are and we’ve kept them open throughout.”

Cllr O’Shea said sports courts, outdoor gyms and play areas were being kept closed for the time being, as the council could not currently be certain that people would socially distance there.

“Most people have been pretty good in the parks over the lockdown,” he added.

“We’ve had some sporadic incidents, but that’s to be expected and the police have supported us.

“We’ve also had our rangers and some of the grounds maintenance crews out and about patrolling and reinforcing the message."
