Bereaved parents back safety moves

12 April 2012

Bereaved parents Amanda and Phil Peak, whose sons were killed in a car crash caused by Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick, will launch Road Safety Week.

Ten-year-old Arron and his brother Ben, eight, were killed when McCormick's Range Rover hit their people carrier on the M6 near Stoke-on Trent in June.

Mr and Mrs Peak will join children whose parents have been killed on the roads to help raise awareness of the devastation caused by careless driving at a photocall at Seedley County Primary School, Salford, Greater Manchester.

Mrs Peak said: "Stop for a moment and think of my two beautiful, innocent boys - killed through no fault of their own, but because of the irresponsible actions of a driver who had been drinking.

"Imagine the total devastation caused to my family on that horrific day in June, which we have had to live with every day since.

"If you have ever thought it ok to get into a car to drive after having a drink, or on too little sleep, or have broken speed limits because you are in a rush, remember my boys."

McCormick, 25, was returning from Ipswich Town midfielder David Norris's wedding in Bolton when the crash happened. Norris, 27, caused controversy when he made what appeared to be a handcuffs gesture while celebrating his goal in Ipswich's 1-0 win at Blackpool on Saturday.

Onlookers thought it was a show of support for his friend McCormick, who is serving a seven-year sentence after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving. Norris has now apologised for his actions.

The launch comes as new research shows parents are failing to protect their children on the roads.

A survey by road safety charity Brake found nine out of 10 children were responsible for doing up their own seatbelt, and just 35% of children said their parents checked they were strapped in.
