Live television is known for being unpredictable.

But spare a thought for weather presenter Carol Kirkwood, who was "upstaged" by a dog this morning after it marked its turf on the beach behind her during a live report from West Wittering beach in West Sussex.

The dog, Connie, who is reportedly owned by a BBC producer, earned her five minutes of fame on the BBC Breakfast show.

As the black Labrador crouched down in the sand and did its business, presenters Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt struggled to contain their laughter back in the studio.

Minchin could be heard saying; "Oh Carol, don't look behind you!" while co-host Stayt said; "Don't turn round!"

Realising the mongrel had been caught on camera, Kirkwood responded; "Upstaged by a dog, it's the story of my life!" to which Stayt replied; "Something like that!"

Kirkwood, 54, who is employed by the Met Office and has been the main BBC Breakfast weather reporter since 2008, was reporting on what is set to be the hottest day of the year so far.

BBC cameraman Paul Martin later tweeted: "I think me and carolkirkwood have just had an 'Aunties bloomers' moment. Carol, plus dog and the call of nature on BBCBreakfast.

"Of all the beaches in all the world, this dog had to pee on mine... Live... On BBCBreakfast with carolkirkwood."

And BBC Breakfast posted a picture of a sombre-looking Connie wearing a lifeguard's t-shirt with the caption: "Someone's looking a bit guilty..."

Fortunately, viewers seemed amused by the incident.

One said; "It was definitely a highlight", while another said; "Upstaged by a black lab. Priceless".

Before the blunder, BBC Breakfast posted a photo of Kirkwood with Connie on its Twitter account with the caption: "Today's to be the hottest of the year so far, so @carolkirkwood's on the beach, with producer Gilly's dog, Connie!"
