Viewers were left baffled after the Cookie Monster appeared on The One Show wearing a remembrance poppy.
The Sesame Street character divided opinion after appearing on the BBC programme with the emblem pinned to his furry costume.
The move attracted strong reactions on social media, with some people calling it "mad" and "ridiculous" while others said they respected the decision.
Other high-profile figures got involved in the debate, with comedian Dara O Briain calling it “satire”.
He tweeted this morning: “The Cookie Monster was made to wear a poppy on the One Show last night. I am choosing to regard this as satire, and thus genius.”
Others were unimpressed at the decision, with some suggesting the decision to put a poppy on the well-known muppet was part of bid to avoid complaints.
Jane Hardy said: “Watching the @OneShow which I normally enjoy, why does the Cookie Monster, essentially a blue rug and ping pong balls, have to wear a poppy?”
George Ogier said: “The One Show have got Cookie Monster wearing a poppy. Imagine being worried that folk will complain if you don't have a puppet wearing one.”
Many simply commented about the “ridiculousness” of the stunt.
Suzi Gage said: “The cookie monster is on the one show. He’s not wearing clothes, but he is wearing a poppy.”
Justin Lewis joked: “Imagine if Cookie Monster appeared on The One Show without a poppy and all hell broke loose.”
It follows controversy in recent weeks over the wearing of poppies, after Fifa banned footballers to pin the flowers onto their armbands.
