14 October 2012

A re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings has been cancelled because of health and safety concerns.

Extreme weather conditions mean a planned event due to take place today mean the famous scene has had to be called off.

English Heritage said 'unexpected torrential rain over several hours' had resulted in an "unacceptably high levels of mud both on the battlefield and on public areas".

The event is one of the highlights of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield site and attracts thousands of people every year.

According to English Heritage's website the day lets visitors "re-live the atmosphere and tension of medieval battle as over 1000 soldiers clash in our annual re-enactment of the 1066 Battle of Hastings, on the very battlefield where it took place.

"Immerse yourself in medieval life as you stroll around the living history encampments; be amazed by the Norman Cavalry display; watch the chain mail and weaponry makers and take an entertaining look at the Bayeux Tapestry on a washing line!

"Marvel at the medieval falconry and see if you have what it takes to be an archer in battle in the have-a-go archery! It really is one of the best family days out in history!"

However unlike the real event which saw the Norman Invasion of England following the death of King Harold this year was a cancelled because of the wash-out.

A message said: "English Heritage regrets that due to extreme weather conditions, the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings will not now be taking place on Sunday 14th October.

"Although the forecast was for fair weather over this weekend, unexpected torrential rain over several hours this morning has resulted in unacceptably high levels of mud both on the battlefield and on public areas, which means for safety reasons, English Heritage has reluctantly decided that the event cannot go ahead on Sunday 14th October.

"The site will remain open, but the event itself will not go ahead."

They added those that booked £8.50 tickets would be automatically refunded.
