Baby P council 'hires from abroad'

12 April 2012

The council at the centre of the Baby P tragedy has hired social workers from abroad to fill vacancy gaps, it has been disclosed.

Haringey Council in north London recruited 22 new staff from the United States and Canada.

There is currently a national shortage in the number of new recruits into the profession.

The death of 17-month old Peter Connelly provoked outrage and resulted in a review of child protection.

His mother, her boyfriend and their lodger were found guilty of causing or allowing Peter's death.

The toddler died in August 2007 after sustaining repeated abuse. He had suffered 50 injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken back.

Doctors, social workers and police failed to save Peter despite him being on the Haringey Council child protection register.

The council's child protection failures resulted in several social workers losing their jobs.

Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children and young people at Haringey Council, explained: "There is a national shortage of social workers, so in common with many other authorities we have also recruited from abroad.

"Our international recruitment has resulted in 22 job offers being made to qualified and experienced social workers from America and parts of Canada. We are looking forward to them joining our team."
